Overview of Doctoral Programs
The USF Muma College of Business offers two distinct doctoral pathways — the PhD in Business Administration for those pursuing academic and research careers, and the Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) for experienced professionals seeking a terminal degree to apply rigorous research to real-world decision-making.
PhD in Business Administration
The PhD in Business Administration is the college’s flagship doctoral program, designed for students who wish to become internationally respected scholars. The program operates as an apprenticeship model, immediately welcoming students into the research community as scholar-collaborators working closely with world-class faculty to tailor a program to individual research interests. Students build their own research catalog through a process of creative and critical inquiry.
The PhD program offers concentrations in Accounting, Finance, Information Systems, and Marketing. Graduates are primarily prepared for careers in academia as professors who blend teaching and research, though the rigorous training in critical and creative thinking also prepares students for careers as business consultants, government researchers, financial analysts, consumer protection experts, and knowledge-economy professionals.
The program is supported by a student-run PhD Student Organization that fosters a camaraderie extending well beyond graduation. USF’s urban setting in Tampa Bay provides abundant access to real-world businesses, organizations, and professionals who enrich student research.
Application Requirements include: Online application, transcripts, GMAT or GRE scores, statement of purpose, résumé, and letters of recommendation.
Financial Aid: A limited number of teaching and graduate assistantships are available, providing part-time employment, a competitive stipend, partial tuition waiver for up to 12 credit hours, and substantial contribution toward student health insurance.

The DBA is offered in two formats: an in-person program and a fully online program. Both require 72 credit hours and are designed to be completed in three years. The in-person program meets one weekend per month (Friday/Saturday), while the online program holds synchronous sessions on alternating Saturdays via Microsoft Teams. The first two years focus predominantly on coursework in research methods; the final year centers on the candidate’s dissertation.
