Three Standout Companies in Tampa Bay: What Makes Them the Best Workplaces?

In this year’s Tampa Bay Times survey of the Top 100 Workplaces, three companies emerged as leaders in their respective categories, setting the standard for others. These companies are Clearwater’s cybersecurity firm KnowBe4, home builder PulteGroup’s West Florida division in Riverview, and Clearwater’s Precision Garage Doors of Tampa Bay.

Leading the Pack: KnowBe4

KnowBe4, a cybersecurity firm based in Clearwater, topped the large workplace category for companies with over 500 employees. It also achieved the number one spot nationwide for companies with 1,000 to 2,500 employees. CEO Stu Sjouwerman attributes their success to a robust corporate culture derived from the best practices of high-tech companies over the last 30 years.

“It’s a combination of radical transparency, extreme ownership, and complete honesty,” Sjouwerman explains. These core values are ingrained in their policies and workflows, collectively known as the “KnowBe4 way.”

The past year has been remarkable for KnowBe4, marked by a successful initial public offering raising $175 million, the addition of over 200 new employees, and the acquisition of a California tech security company for $80 million. Despite the increased responsibilities of being a public company, Sjouwerman sees it as an opportunity to reinforce their best practices rather than a burden.

KnowBe4’s commitment to its employees is evident in their inclusive stock plan. Unlike many companies that reserve stock options for middle and upper management, KnowBe4 offers restricted stock units (RSUs) to all employees, ensuring everyone shares in the company’s success. This approach fosters a sense of ownership and prevents departmental siloing, enhancing overall productivity and growth.

Despite higher turnover in certain areas, KnowBe4’s reputation as a top workplace makes it relatively easy to attract new talent. Their high Glassdoor ratings reflect the positive work environment and commitment to employee satisfaction.

Building with Pride: PulteGroup

PulteGroup’s West Florida division, based in Riverview, secured the top spot in the midsize category. Known for its robust presence in Tampa Bay’s booming housing market, PulteGroup’s employees describe a workplace where they feel valued, empowered, included, and respected.

President Sean Strickler, who has been with PulteGroup for 28 years, emphasizes the tangible impact of their work. “Our team takes pride in building homes where families will grow and create memories,” Strickler says. This sense of purpose drives employee engagement and satisfaction.

Despite the challenges posed by supply chain and labor constraints, PulteGroup achieved 20% growth in 2021, constructing 1,400 homes. Strickler attributes their success to strong communication and a focus on employee development. Each team member has a personalized development plan, revisited regularly to ensure continuous growth and engagement.

Maintaining strong relationships with subcontractors is also crucial for PulteGroup. By recognizing and appreciating their efforts, the company fosters loyalty and ensures the delivery of quality homes to their customers.

A Family Atmosphere: Precision Garage Doors of Tampa Bay

Precision Garage Doors of Tampa Bay, a Clearwater-based company, earned top honors in the small business category for firms with fewer than 100 employees. Founder and CEO Jim Rapp’s approach centers around treating employees like family. “I run the company as if it’s their company,” Rapp says, emphasizing the importance of listening to and meeting employees’ needs.

Since its inception in 2008, Precision Garage Doors has grown into a regional leader in garage door installation and repair. Rapp fosters a close-knit, supportive environment by organizing company outings and ensuring regular interaction with his employees.

One employee described Precision Garage Doors as a family they never had, praising the management’s genuine care and support. Rapp believes that ensuring everyone wins—employees, customers, and vendors—is the key to success.

The company’s inclusive culture and regular communication have helped maintain morale and productivity, even during challenging times like the COVID-19 pandemic. By leveraging technology for continuous dialogue, Precision Garage Doors creates an office-like atmosphere, keeping employees connected and engaged.

These three companies—KnowBe4, PulteGroup, and Precision Garage Doors—exemplify what it takes to be a top workplace in Tampa Bay. Their commitment to strong corporate cultures, employee development, and inclusive practices sets them apart as leaders in their fields. By fostering environments where employees feel valued and engaged, they not only achieve business success but also create workplaces where people are proud to work.
